I Can Show You Better Than I Can Tell You
“I can show you better than I can tell you.”
That phrase was a hallmark of my teenage years, specifically used by my mom when my attitude and smart mouth kinda got the best of me. 🙊😂
There was a season in our relationship where I believed that my mom was my arch nemesis. She lacked understanding of the complexity of my high school life and, overall, just didn’t get it.
Whew! Life and time have shown me better than anyone could’ve told me that my relationship with my mom is one of the most vital connections I’ll ever get to experience.
Confession: I’ve never been a fan of thunderstorms and they used to scare the life out of me. When I went to college about 4 hours away, during my first bad thunderstorm I called my mom with hysterical tears from my tiny dorm room. It was at that moment I knew my perspective was dissolving. Ha.
That call transformed into random, more consistent ones about decisions ranging from what to eat for lunch to what’s next in life. Being apart kinda made my heart grow fonder and gave me perspective.
In adulthood, time has deepened our relationship in numerous ways. I've become a wife and a mom, managed health challenges, and morphed into her primary caregiver and even a business partner.
This Mother’s Day month I’m reminded that value sometimes has to be sifted by time and life to be fully appreciated. So I want to encourage you this month to embrace & appreciate your journey with your daughters and your mothers.
They’re all different laced with unique intricacies, and some circumstances that only you two will understand - let this be what connects you.
Some relationships might one day bloom, others may not, and some may have never existed. Regardless of where you fall on that spectrum, here’s what is non-negotiable: your relationship with your mom, or mom-figure, has shaped who you are today; good, bad, or indifferent.
Your relationship with your daughter will shape her too.
So, thank you for doing the work to love, care for, and be present for your daughter. Happy Mother’s Day month y’all 💗💗
